Hijab issue at VSU to be decided by Academic Council

On November 25, the Academic Council of the Volgograd State University (VSU) is going to decide, whether Muslim female students can attend classes wearing hijabs. So far, there is no ban on hijabs; however, students have voted for excluding Muslim headscarves (hijabs) from the list of clothes acceptable at the University.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 15, at the all-VSU conference, the majority of students-delegates voted in favour of amending the "Internal Regulations of the VSU" governing the university dress code, including a ban on hijabs.

Anna Matveeva, the head of the media centre of the VSU, said in her comment to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that so far there was no official ban on wearing Muslim headscarves in the university.

A VSU student said that earlier an initiative group of female students collected signatures against hijabs. Now, five students of the VSU wear hijabs.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that after the terror act on October 21, the Union of Muslims of the Volgograd Region claimed cases of aggression against Muslims. According Imam Rustam Khazrat, Muslim girls were afraid to leave their homes.

Let us also remind you that in December 2010, the top managers of the Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University informed students about the prohibition to enter the university premises in hijabs, with piercings or bare bellies. However, later it turned out that it was not a ban, but a sort of recommendation.
