Azerbaijan: Djamil Gasanli announces continuation of fighting for holding new presidential election

On October 18, supporters of Djamil Gasanli, the former candidate for the presidency of the opposition, unsuccessfully attempted to challenge the legality of the final protocol of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan. According to the above protocol, incumbent President Ilham Aliev was elected the president of the country for the third time. At present, the activists prepare a complaint to the Supreme Court. This was reported today by Djamil Gasanli himsef.

At his press conference, Djamil Gasanli has emphasized that the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) will continue fighting to seek to cancel the outcome of the election and appoint new parliamentary elections by legitimate peaceful means. "First, we file a complaint to the Supreme Court. On October 27, we plan to hold a protest rally. Moreover, we will inform the world community about the falsifications. We have records and videos about violations from 2500 electoral precincts," Djamil Gasanli has stated.

According to him, in Europe, local human rights defenders and political migrants from Azerbaijan will organize a campaign of public reprimand of members of the mission of the European Parliament and the PACE, which gave a positive assessment of the election.

On November 14-24, Djamil Gasanli also plans to visit the USA, where he will meet officials from the State Department, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the human rights organizations to inform about the political processes in Azerbaijan and about the human rights situation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that earlier, non-compliance of the election campaign with the international standards was reported by the US State Department and observers from the OSCE; meanwhile, the PACE and the European Parliament have estimated the presidential election in Azerbaijan as free, fair and transparent.
