Court forcibly brings Tbilisi Mayor for questioning as witness

Saturday, February 16, Gigi Ugulava, Mayor of Tbilisi, will be forcibly accompanied to the questioning as a witness. The above decision was made tonight by the City Court of the capital of Georgia.

By making the above decision, the Court granted the motion filed by the Prosecutor's Office of the Old Tbilisi District. The questioning is caused by the events of February 8, when a clash between supporters and opponents of the speech of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili occurred. Gigi Ugulava was among the participants of the events.

Earlier, the Mayor of Tbilisi was repeatedly summoned for questioning as a witness to the district police station; however, he did not come there and stated that he was waiting for investigators at the building of the City Mayoralty.

Gigi Ugulava has stated he is willing to appear for questioning at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), if the Court pronounces the appropriate decision, the "News-Georgia" reports.

The Mayor demanded to question Irakli Garibashvili, Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, on the same case. According to the Gigi Ugulava's story, the Minister who conducts the investigation clearly violates the presumption of innocence, since he has earlier called supporters of Mikhail Saakashvili to be provocateurs, the "Georgia Online" reports.
