Gurgen Mushegyan: load on Yerevan roads exceeds permissible limits

Residents of Yerevan report on poor condition of the city road network and fear of traffic jams.

The city centre turned into a traffic intersection. According to the opinion of Gurgen Mushegyan, former Chief Architect of Yerevan, independently from whatever side of the city the cars start, they have to pass through the city centre.

The former Chief Architect of Yerevan believes that one of the reasons for the situation is the absence of bypass roads envisaged by the city master plan. He mentions unstructured approach to the construction of traffic intersections as another cause of traffic jams in Yerevan.

According the opinion of Gurgen Mushegyan, at present, the territories that were earlier designated for the construction of traffic intersections are built up with different buildings. "And return of those territories to use them on purpose will require enormous expenses."

"If we fail to implement earlier planned road structures, in a very short period of time, Yerevan may face a serious impasse," the former Chief Architect of Yerevan has concluded.

Grant Mikaelyan, a Yerevan resident, compares Yerevan and Tbilisi. "In Tbilisi, they quickly realized that the transport infrastructure of the city is unable to cope and will not be able to cope with the flow of vehicles. As a result, some streets, primarily, pair parallel streets, have become one-sided." According to the opinion of Grant Mikaelyan, the practice should also help in the case of Yerevan.
