Former Chief Architect of Sochi sentenced to 20 months of imprisonment

Today, the Central District Court of Sochi has pronounced the verdict to Oleg Sheveiko, the former Chief Architect. The Court has sentenced the former official to 1 year and 8 months of imprisonment in a penal colony of settlement for abuse of power. The defence did not agree with the verdict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 4, the case against Oleg Sheveiko was brought to the Court. The court session was held on April 22. The court hearings were held in a special manner, and the defendant pleaded guilty. Prosecutors asked penalty in the form of three years of conditional imprisonment, and the defence insisted on penalty in the form of fine.

According to the investigators' version, at the instruction of Oleg Sheveiko, three construction companies received permits for construction without the urban developing plan. Besides, the developers did not have a positive conclusion of the state ecological examination of project documentation. In particular, the permits were issued for the construction of a multi-apartment residential complex in the Khosta District, a hotel in the Adler District, and a multi-apartment building in the Central District of Sochi.

At the court session held on April 25, Oleg Sheveiko delivered his final statement, in which he had expressed the hope for a fair verdict, and after that, the judge pronounced the verdict the sentence to 1 year and 8 months of imprisonment in a penal colony of settlement, the "Sochinskie Novosti" reports.

Gennady Karlyshev, the advocate of the former Chief Architect, has stated that he and his client do not agree with the verdict. According to him, the Court has not taken into account all the circumstances of the case, in particular, the health status of the defendant, which is not compatible with serving his sentence in places of detention. According to the Gennady Karlyshev's version, the defence will file an appeal within ten days. And Oleg Sheveiko is obliged to spend that period of time in Sochi without leaving the city, the "Sochi Express" reports.
