Experts put the Russian Federation in the 9th place out of 158 countries from the point of view of terrorist threat. The number of victims in the Caucasus is going down

Experts of the International Institute of Economy and Peace put Russia in the 9th place out of 158 in the rating “Global index of terrorist threats”. In 2010 Russia occupied the 7th position. The situation in Northern Caucasus was called the main cause of instability in the country. However, upon the calculation by the “Caucasian Knot”, total number of victims of the conflict in the South of Russia has been going down during the last three years.  

According to the compilers of the rating, in 2011, 182 acts of terror took place in the Russian Federation which was put in the 9th place in the “Global index of terrorist threats” by the Institute of Economy and Peace, 159 persons perished and 431 were wounded as a result. Upon the results of 2010, Russia occupied the 7th position in the index with 244 acts of terror, 277 killed and 593 wounded people.

Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Yemen were in the lead of the list in 2011, in 2010 the first positions were occupied by Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Thailand. According to the “Global index of terrorist threats”, Poland, Turkmenistan, Cuba, Singapore, Mongolia and South Korea were among the most safe countries during the same years, “Commersant” newspaper reports.

However, the experts consider the situation in Northern Caucasus the main source of instability.

“An awful level of corruption and social stratification still remains in Northern Caucasus. All these are the best feed for various sorts of radical movements”, Igor Khohlov, research scholar of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IWEIR), says.

According to the data of the “Caucasian Knot”, no less than 1710 people (among them 754 killed and 956 wounded) in 2010, no less than 1378 people (including 750 killed and at least 628 wounded) in 2011 became victims or armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. As for 11 months of this year, 1149 people (659 killed and 490 wounded) and according to the data of last year for the same period, 1203 people (684 killed and 519 wounded) 2011 became victims or armed conflict in Northern Caucasus.

It should be taken into consideration that the above mentioned statistics cannot he hundred per cent precise concerning the number of victims in every category marked out in the survey. News reports do not cover all the data. It is not always possible to verify reliability of law enforcement bodies’ statements.
