Rostov Region: stray dogs attack and kill a child

A seven year old boy died when attacked by stray dogs in Novocherkassk, said the MIA of the Rostov Region.

"In Novocherkassk, on January 8, at 1:15 p.m., in the garden partnership of the village of Molodyozhny, a dead seven-year-old child was found. As established by forensic experts, his death was caused by multiple injuries in the form of lacerations as a result of dogs' attack," said the MIA.

According to preliminary data, the child was on his way to his mother, who was looked after the summer cottage of her friend, when he was allegedly attacked by a pack of stray dogs, the "Interfax" reports.

The Novocherkassk police have made a submission to the City Administration and asked them to tighten the control over liquidation of stray dogs.

Pavel Astakhov, the Children's Ombudsman at he President of the Russian Federation, has instructed Irina Cherkasova, the Children's Ombudsperson in the Rostov Region, to conduct her own inquiry into the incident, the Ombudsman's website reports.

"It is necessary to establish the reasons of the incident and bring those responsible for control of stray animals to justice! All the vicinities should be examined for the presence of stray dogs, and the dogs that are unattended by their owners. All the measures should be taken to protect children from attacks of aggressive animals," said Pavel Astakhov.

In June 2011, members of the organization "All are equal before the law and court" held a picket outside the court building, where the lawsuit on recognition of the activities of the LLC "Bastille" of killing stray dogs as illegal. On June 17, 2011, the Pervomaiskiy District Court of Krasnodar passed a decision on recognition of the activities of the "Bastille" to be illegal.

In April last year, a picket in defence of animals was held in Sochi, where people demanded to stop extermination of animals.
