Russia extends its military base in Armenia till 2044

Russia and Armenia have signed a protocol extending the agreement on the Russian military base in Armenia. The document was signed by defence ministers of Russia and Armenia in the presence of both Presidents - Serzh Sargsyan and Dmitri Medvedev.

According to the protocol on extension of the stay of Russian Military Base No. 102 in Armenia, it is assumed that in will stay there for 49 years instead of the previous 25. Besides, the tasks of the Russian base will include, apart from "execution functions to protect interests of the Russian Federation," also ensuring security of Armenia. For these purpose, "modern and compatible arms and military equipment" will be delivered to Armenia," the ITAR-TASS reports.
