Scientists point to historical prerequisites for treating Cossacks as a people
The directory of the "Rosstat" (Russian Federal State Statistics Service), prepared for the All-Russian Population Census, lists over ten nationalities containing the word "Cossack". The demands of the Cossacks living in Southern Russia to recognize them as a people are historically justified; however, they sound amid the erosion of Cossacks' national identity, scientists have pointed out.

Kaitag embroidery is exposed in Saint Petersburg amid revival of Dagestani folk crafts
The Russian Ethnographic Museum is holding an exhibition of unique Kaitag embroidery of 18-19th centuries, which has gained worldwide fame due to its resemblance to avant-garde movements in painting. In Soviet times, the tradition of this embroidery was interrupted and was revived in the Kaitag District of Dagestan only at the end of the 20th century; now hundreds of local females are skilled in this craft.

Portrait exhibition of doctors who perished from COVID-19 touches visitors
The Museum of Local Lore in the city of Shakhty, Rostov Region, is hosting an exhibition of the painter, Elena Sukhorukova, entitled "The Hippocrates' Warriors". Her 103 portraits depict doctors who died after being infected with coronavirus across Russia. Visitors to the exhibition have called these doctors heroes; some could not hold back their tears.

In Rostov-on-Don, a court found activist Anastasia Shevchenko guilty under a criminal article on participation in activities of an undesirable organization and punished her with four years of conditional sentence.

FSB reports prevention of terror acts in Northern Caucasus
In four regions of southern Russia, a total of 19 people have been detained who had planned terror acts in Northern Caucasus; extremist materials, weapons and ammunition have been seized from them, the Russian FSB (Federal Security Bureau) has reported today.

Ingushetia and Kalmykia are leaders in Russian rating of fighting HIV
The authors of the study of the situation with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) detection and treatment in Russia have placed Ingushetia and Kalmykia into the group of 13 best regions. Doctors of the Stavropol and Volgograd Regions are also successfully coping with the problem, while in other regions of the Southern Federal and North-Caucasian Federal Districts (SFD and NCFD) the problem is expressed at an average level.

Political analysts predict decay of protests in Southern Russia
Navalny's arrest triggered no mass protests in Krasnodar, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don, since many of the participants in the January actions were not his supporters, the political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have noted and predicted a further decay of protest activeness in the regions.
