After rights defenders' request about pardoning, Elchin Mamed ends hunger strike

After rights defenders' request for his pardoning, Elchin Mamed, an Azerbaijani human rights defender and journalist, has stopped his hunger strike that he kept in the colony.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 8, 2021, a court in Baku refused to satisfy Elchin Mamed's motion, who asked to replace the remaining term of his imprisonment for the conditional one, or to transfer him to a colony-settlement in connection with his serving a third of his prison term. On December 9, 2021, the Court of Appeal upheld this decision; and the human rights defender treated it as customized one. On May 3, 2022, Mamed went on a hunger strike demanding his release.

On May 10, Mamed stopped his hunger strike, Elchin Gasanzade, a deputy chairman of the "Society for Legal Enlightenment of Sumgait Youth", said citing the activist's relatives. "Elchin Mamed stopped his hunger strike after his elderly mother's persistent requests. Besides, Elchin was grateful that media and human rights defenders had reacted to his action. The monitoring group of Azerbaijani human rights organizations has included Mamed in the list of prisoners, for whose pardoning they ask the country's leadership. The group has expressed support for him in the media," Mr Gasanzade told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
