OSCE Representative on Media Freedom condemns attack on Aiten Mamedova

The attack on the Azerbaijani journalist, Aiten Mamedova, is a heinous act of intimidation, Teresa Ribeiro, the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Representative on Freedom of the Media, has stated, calling for a prompt inquiry into the incident.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 9, the Azerbaijani Police launched an inquiry into the attack on the journalist, Aiten Mamedova. The incident occurred in the Binagadi District of Baku. The man, who followed Ms Mamedova into the elevator of the building, put a knife to her throat and demanded not to cover a certain trial, after which he disappeared, the victim said, linking the attack with her coverage of a high-profile case of a child murder.

On May 9, Ms Ribeiro condemned the attack on Aiten Mamedova and called for a "prompt and thorough investigation," the "turan.az" writes, citing Teresa Ribeiro's post in social media.

She has treated the attack as "a heinous intimidation act" and found it "unacceptable." She also noted that "journalists should be able to safely do their job."
