Georgian MFA calls presidential election in South Ossetia illegal

The presidential election in South Ossetia has no legal force and violate the Georgia’s sovereignty, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 8, the voting in the second round of the presidential election took place in South Ossetia. Alan Gagloev won 54.2% of the votes following the processing of 97% of the protocols of precinct election commissions in South Ossetia, while current president Anatoly Bibilov gained 43.3% of the votes. On May 8, Anatoly Bibilov congratulated Alan Gagloev on his victory in the second round.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Georgia condemned the presidential election held in South Ossetia. “Such illegal actions violate the fundamental principles and norms of international law and grossly violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders,” the Georgian MFA has announced today. “Under the conditions of Russian occupation, no elections can have legal force,” the Georgian MFA emphasizes in its statement, posted today on the MFA’s website.
