Agvan Ovsepyan, former Prosecutor General of Armenia, left in custody

The Court of Appeal has left Agvan Ovsepyan, an Armenia's former Public Prosecutor General, under arrest by rejecting the defence's appeal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 7, 2021, a court in Yerevan ruled to arrest Agvan Ovsepyan for two months by accusing him of illegal entrepreneurial activities, bribery and money laundering. Ovsepyan refuses to plead guilty. On November 2, his arrest was extended by two months.

According to investigators, Ovsepyan, being the General Public Prosecutor (in 2004-2013) and the Chairman of the Investigating Committee (in 2014-2018), managed a number of enterprises. He allegedly received a bribe in the amount of USD 380,000, embezzled property worth USD 1.6 million and legalized the money obtained by criminal means in the amount of USD 2.6 million. Ovsepyan resigned as the head of the Investigating Committee of Armenia on June 11, 2018, shortly after the "Velvet Revolution" and the advent to power of the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan.
