Azerbaijani MP Salimov arrested for three months

A Baku court has arrested Eldaniz Salimov, an MP, who was deprived of his parliamentary immunity, under a case of abuse of office.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 3, the Azerbaijani National Assembly (Parliament) agreed to lift Eldaniz Salimov's immunity after he had a fight with a policeman in the city of Khachmaz. According to the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO), on July 29, at the "Stary Dvor" (Old Yard) restaurant in Khachmaz, Salimov beat up Zaur Mirzoev, a policeman of the Khachmaz ROVD (District Interior Division). The initiated criminal case is being investigated under the article on abuse of office.

After the parliamentary session, Eldaniz Salimov was detained for conducting investigative actions. He was charged with abuse of office, an Azeri law enforcement source told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the source, the Binagadi District Court of Baku has satisfied the motion lodged by the Investigating Department of the GPO demanding to arrest the MP for three months.

The deprivation of immunity does not yet deprive the MP of his mandate, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC). The termination of MP's powers in case of bringing him to criminal liability occurs after the entry of the conviction into force, the CEC has noted.
