In Armenia, villagers demand not to launch a mine operation

Today, residents of the Margaovit village have come to a street protest against mining developments. The protestors suggest that the operation of a copper mine will worsen the environmental situation in the Lori Region.

According to the villagers, they have learned from the Internet that starting from today, there will be discussions on the launch of mines in the villages of Debed, Yegegnut, Vaagni, Vaagnadzor, and Margaovit. The local residents have decided to declare that they are against the operation of the copper mines, the “Panorama.am” reports today.

“There are so many mines in the Lori Region alone. So, we have no choice but to oppose the operations of the mines,” said one of the protesters as quoted by the “Panorama.am”.

“There is a mine in Tegut, and there are mines in Akhtala and in Shamlug. We feel being suffocated by the smell of acid,” another protester said.

Gayane Sargsyan, the former deputy governor of the Lori Region supported the villagers’ protest. The former deputy governor declares that she opposes the operation of any mine in the Lori Region, the “Panorama.am” reports.
