KChR resident achieves inquiry into torture by law enforcers

The torture case of Shamil Atabiev, a resident of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR), by law enforcers is at the initial stage, his advocate has stated. The defence insists on a repeated medical examination in order to re-qualify the case on abuse of power into a heavier charge.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Shamil Atabiev, the acting director of the LLC "Dorozhnik" (Road Builder), after searches at his company, was arrested for 12 days for petty hooliganism. Later, Atabiev stated that he was tortured by law enforcers on September 17, his advocate, Andrei Solovyov, has stated. According to the advocate, due to the torture, Atabiev's health deteriorated; and he underwent a heart surgery.

In his comment on the reasons for such cruel treatment of Shamil Atabiev, his advocate said that the torturers' main aim was to knock out testimonies against third persons.

Alexei Litvinenko, Atabiev's new advocate, has noted that the defence will raise the issue of a direct link of law enforcers' illegal actions with the aggravation of Atabiev's diseases.

"They inflicted a grave harm to his health – he ended up in the intensive care unit and was on the verge of life and death," Mr Litvinenko has stressed.
