Abkhazia: law enforcer gets under inquiry after woman's death after visiting SIZO

According to investigators, Dmitry Mikvabiya has allowed, contrary to the law, a 24-hour-long visit of a Sukhumi woman with a man held at the SIZO (pre-trial prison). In the morning, she was found dead there.

A criminal case has been initiated against Major Dmitry Mikvabiya, a deputy head of the SIZO of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Abkhazia, on abuse of office.

As reported on the website of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Abkhazia, on October 25, Mikvabiya took over the duty. A girl came to visit one of the detainees. Mikvabiya had the power to allow her to see the detainee for up to three hours, and only based on a written permission of the person or body in charge of the criminal case. However, Mikvabiya allowed them to stay with each other for 24 hours. In the morning, the girl was found dead. Her body with no signs of violent death was found by the detainee.
