Prosecutor asks seven years in prison for Serzh Sargsyan's nephew

Aik Sargsyan, a nephew of Serzh Sargsyan, was charged with attempted murder; the prosecutor asked the court to sentence him to seven years in prison. The defendant has refused to plead guilty; and his advocate stated violations in the case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 4, 2018, the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Armenia resumed the criminal case initiated 11 years ago with a figurant Aik Sargsyan. The case was opened back in 2007 under the article on careless infliction of grievous bodily harm, and then re-qualified into an attempted murder.

Serzh Sargsyan, the third president of Armenia, was elected to the post of Prime Minister, but after six days left the post under the pressure of street protests. Nikol Pashinyan, the opposition leader became the new Prime Minister.

The prosecutor petitioned to stop the criminal prosecution on charges of illegal bearing and possession of weapons based on the limitation time expiry, the Armenian GPO has reported.

The prosecutor has stated that Aik Sargsyan's family, by using their ties, achieved the case termination in 2007. "David Simonyan, who was wounded in the stomach by Aik Sargsyan's shot, became disabled and for many years was afraid to tell the truth," said the prosecutor.
