Salome Zurabishvili demands compensation from Russia to deported residents of Georgia

Russia did not fulfil the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to pay 100 million euros to Georgian citizens deported in 2006, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili recalled at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 31, 2019, the ECtHR awarded 10,000-15,000 euros of compensation to each of 1500 complainants from Georgia. The Georgian authorities filed a lawsuit against Russia. The ECtHR's decision was to be fulfilled within three months. In October 2019, the CE Committee of Ministers took up the enforcement of the decision of the Strasbourg Court.

On January 28, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili spoke at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. "I would like to repeat the call of our authorities to the Council of Europe (CE) and its members to take an active part in forcing Russia to immediately fulfil the decision of the European Court," the "MBH Media" quoted the Georgian President as saying.

Salome Zurabishvili also recalled that the ECtHR is expected to pronounced a decision on a lawsuit against Russia regarding the so called "five-day war" in August 2008. "All Georgian society is waiting for justice to be achieved. This will become an example for others," said Salome Zurabishvili as quoted in a report posted on the Georgian President's website on January 28 as translated from Georgian by the "Caucasian Knot".
