PACE explains problem of political prisoners in Azerbaijan by system

Azerbaijan needs "fundamental reforms" to fulfill its obligations to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights, the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights announces.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 25, a working group of Azerbaijani human rights defenders, NGO activists, and lawyers released an updated list of political prisoners, which included 112 surnames.

Among other proposals, the PACE Committee urged the authorities of Azerbaijan to fully and effectively implement the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

According to Rasul Jafarov, the head of the Human Rights Club, the ECtHR pronounced eight decisions in case of Azerbaijani citizens: one in relation to Rasul Jafarov himself, the rest  in relation to opposition politician Ilgar Mamedov, human rights defenders Intigam Aliev and Anar Mamedli, and four in relation to activists Rashad Gasanov, Zaur Gurbanly, Uzeyir Mamedli, and Rashadat Akhundov.
