Head of news service fired from "Rustavi-2" TV Company

Nodar Meladze, the head of the "Rustavi-2" news service, was fired, Paata Saliya, Director General of the TV Company, announced live on air on August 20. He treated a conflict of interest as the reason for Meladze's resignation.

He also stated that several more employees will be fired for the same reason, including Laperashvili, Andjaparidze and Gabuniya. According to his story, he had filed a lawsuit against the fired employees.

On July 7, 2019, Giorgi Gabuniya, a presenter of the "Rustavi-2", at the beginning of the "Postscript" programme, addressed the audience in Russian. He broke into foul language against the President of Russia, in particular, he insulted his parents. At night on July 8, several hundred people staged a protest in front of the office of the "Rustavi-2" in Tbilisi. The Georgian President and Prime Minister, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) treated Gabuniya's statement as a provocation.

"The dismissal of Meladze and others was caused by financial problems and the damage they caused to the 'Rustavi-2'," Mr Saliya has explained.
