Azerbaijan condemns Armenia for building road in the conflict zone

The plans of Armenian authorities to build a new 150-kilometre road to Nagorno-Karabakh nullify the successes in resolving the conflict, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated.

Azerbaijani authorities have urged the co-chairs of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Minsk Group to interfere in the situation. "Despite the creation of the favourable ground for resolving the conflict, Armenia, by hiding behind the ceasefire regime, continues its illegal activities in a destructive manner; and this is just another provocation aimed to undermine the negotiation process," the Azerbaijani MFA has stated.

The "Meydan TV" has quoted the statement of the Azerbaijani MFA that "the statements of the Armenian party about their striving for a peaceful settlement of the conflict are "hypocrisy and deception of the international community."

The MFA has reminded that the international humanitarian law, in particular the 1949 Geneva Convention, prohibits any illegal activity in occupied territories.

Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh are negotiating the construction of a 150-kilometre road from Kapan to Gadrut, the "News-Armenia" reports with reference to Armen Grigoryan, the secretary of the Security Council of Armenia.

It is planned to build the road in two-three years, the "Radio Azatutyun" reports with reference to David Babayan, the press secretary of the president of Nagorno-Karabakh.
