ECtHR obliges Azerbaijan to pay 22,500 euro to activist Ilkin Rustamzade

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has recognized that the rights of Ilkin Rustamzade, a sentenced activist of the movement "Nida", to liberty and security of person were violated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 17, 2013, Ilkin Rustamzade was detained for hooliganism: investigators treated organization of a dancing flash mob and posting videos on YouTube as disorderly conduct. On May 6, 2014, the court sentenced Ilkin Rustamzade and seven other activists of the movement "Nida" to six-eight years of imprisonment.

Ilkin Rustamzade complained to the ECtHR about his arrest and detention, unreasonably approved by the court.

The ECtHR's decisions concerning two other complaints filed by Ilkin Rustamzade should resolve the issue of his release, believes Elshan Gasanov, the coordinator of the "Union for the Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan" (UFPPA).

It should be noted that Ilkin Rustamzade is recognized as a "prisoner of conscience" by the human rights organization "Amnesty International" (AI).
