Sources in Chechnya: family of man accused of killing taxi driver and her relatives reconciled

A case against a resident of Chechnya, accused of killing a female taxi driver from North Ossetia and robbery, was brought to court. Representatives of the Chechen religious figures and relatives of the defendant travelled to North Ossetia and conducted a ceremony of reconciliation with the family of the killed taxi driver, reported a source from the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) of Chechnya.

According to investigators, at night on April 21, 2018, a resident of Grozny murdered a 40-year-old female taxi driver from North Ossetia. The man stabbed her several times and threw the body into the Sunzha River.

In last May, representatives of the Chechen religious figures and relatives of the defendants travelled to the village of Chermen in North Ossetia and conducted a ceremony of reconciliation with the family of the killed taxi driver, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by a source from the Chechen SAM.

"In Chermen, with the mediation of the Mufti of North Ossetia, there was a ceremony of reconciliation between the family members (of the defendant) and the relatives of the killed woman. The deceased woman had three children, and the family of the (alleged) murderer provided them with material assistance," the source said.

Experts of adats note that for the murder of a woman, relatives of the victim have the right to kill two men from among the murderer's relatives.

In Northern Caucasus, the tradition of blood feud which developed under the clan system to protect the honour and property of clans, acts as an important social mechanism also in our time. According to the tradition, relatives of a murdered person must take revenge on murderer or his relatives, notes the information material entitled "Blood feud: how they kill now in the Caucasus" and published in the information section of the "Caucasian Knot".
