Foreigner arrested in Azerbaijan on espionage suspicion

A court in Azerbaijan decided to arrest Bakhram Khasanzade, suspected of collecting military information and recruiting local residents.

He was detained while trying to illegally cross the state border, the public relations department of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan has reported.

According to investigators, as instructed by foreign special services, the detainee gathered intelligence information about Azerbaijani militaries, military-strategic facilities, equipment, and relations with foreign countries, as well as about the state security and the defence system of Azerbaijan. Besides, he recruited Azerbaijani citizens to cooperate with foreign intelligence services, the SSS has reported.
