Ingush activist's defence disagrees with extension of his arrest

Magomed Khazbiev's advocates have filed a complaint with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ingushetia against the decision of the Magas District Court, according to which Khazbiyev's arrest has been again extended.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that from March 12 to 20, Ingush oppositionist Magomed Khazbiev was on a hunger strike at the Karabulak SIZO to protest against conditions of detention and refusal of medical examination.

Magomed Khazbiev, who arrived in Ingushetia from Chechnya, was arrested on January 11 on suspicion of illegal possession of firearms and insulting a law enforcer. On January 25, Khazbiev's advocates said that his state of health had deteriorated in the SIZO; and the activist himself complained about the "fascist" custody conditions.

On April 9 the court extended Magomed Khazbiev's arrest until June 11.

The investigator who had petitioned for the extension could not explain to the court on what grounds Khazbiev should stay at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), Kheda Ibrieva, one of his advocates, has explained.

"We asked to justify to the court why Khazbiev should be kept in isolation from the society, and the judge asked why the investigator had petitioned about the extension of the arrest. The investigator replied that when he receives the materials of the linguistic examination, he will need to interrogate Khazbiev. The investigator failed to present a more substantial reason," Kheda Ibrieva told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
