Igor Nagavkin left in custody

In Moscow, the court has extended the term of detention for Igor Nagavkin until September 28. This has been reported today by advocates of the rights defender who is on hunger strike at the SIZO (pre-trial prison). According to them, the court pronounced the decision in their absence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Igor Nagavkin was taken in custody on suspicion of committing a theft in Volgograd on October 2, 2016. He pleads not guilty. On April 10, 2017, the rights defender was transferred to Moscow.

Igor Nagavkin is being kept at the Butyrka SIZO. On August 8, he declared indefinite hunger strike, seeking an impartial investigation into his case. On September 15, advocate Farit Murtazin reported Igor Nagavkin "chose September 16 as the last day of refusing food." The hunger strike will be terminated for health reasons, but Igor Nagavkin does not retract his claims to the investigator and the Prosecutor's Office.

According to advocate Farit Murtazin, despite the motion from advocates, the Cheryomushki Court of Moscow pronounced the decision to extend the detention of Igor Nagavkin for 12 days, until September 28. Advocate Farit Murtazin has noted the Court considered the investigator's motion to extend the detention of Igor Nagavkin in custody in presence of an appointed advocate.

Valery Shukhardin, another advocate of Igor Nagavkin, has stated he treats the pronouncement of the Court's decision in the absence of the hired advocates as a violation of the Igor Nagavkin's right to defence.
