Residents of Gali District demand to grant them citizenship of Abkhazia

Today, the village of Nabakia in the Gali District of Abkhazia has hosted the action held by residents of the villages of Verkhny Bargyap, Otobaya Pervaya, and Nabakia. The event was attended by about 80 people.

In their conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, the protesters have stated that they want to be granted Abkhazian or Russian citizenship, but only residence permits are issued for them.

"We don't understand such disrespect towards us, residents of Abkhazia! We want to be granted citizenship of Abkhazia and not residence permits. If the authorities do not want to grant us Abkhazian citizenship, then we want to be granted Russian citizenship," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by a woman, taking part in the action.

Temur Nadarai, the leader of the Gali District, has explained that residents of the Gali District, who are now citizens of Georgia, cannot be granted citizenship of Abkhazia in accordance with the Law "On the Citizenship of the Republic of Abkhazia".
