BCA upholds verdict to journalist Gashimli

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has dismissed the appeal complaint lodged by the journalist Parviz Gashimli against his conviction.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 15 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Parviz Gashimli, an employee of the newspaper "Bizim Yol", the head of the website Moderator.az and of the public association "Centre for Defence of Citizens' Civil and Political Rights", to eight years in prison. Another figurant in the case, Tavakkyul Gurbanov, received 8.5 years of imprisonment. According to the court, Gashimli conspired with Gurbanov with the aim to organize sale of firearms from Iran. Gashimli denies all the charges.

The consideration of the appeal complaint was held on December 24 at the BAS under the chairmanship of Judge Vagif Mursagulov. "Unfortunately, the consideration of the appeal complaint on the merits without a partial repeated judicial investigation proved to be a mere formality. The complaint was rejected; and the sentence to the journalist was left unchanged," Bakhruz Bairamov, Gashimli's advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
