Kaspiysk

Town in Dagestan, republican subordination, 14 km south-east of Makhachkala, its industrial satellite. Located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, in the Primorskaya Lowland, near foothills of the Greater Caucasus. The nearest railway station is Makhachkala. Population (1992 est.) 62.4 thousand.

Arose in 1932 as the industrial community of Dvigatelstroy. Town of Kaspiysk since 1947. Present Kaspiysk has the factory of Dagdizel, a precision mechanics works, a stone-working plant, a brickworks; a small-ware weaving mill, the Universal factory; a steam power plant; a fur farm. Mechanical faculty of Makhachkala polytechnic institute.

Museum of local lore. Museum of S. Amet-Khan, a test-pilot, twice Hero of the Soviet Union.

Kaspiysk is designed under a gridiron pattern. Well planted with trees and gardens. The central part of Kaspiysk is built up with multi-storeyed residential and office buildings of the 1940-1950s. Present houses of increased number of storeys are built in the district adjacent to the seaside park, which creates a sharp town-planning outline profile from the seaside.
