Novokubansk

Rayon (sector) centre in Krasnodar kray (region), 187 km east of Krasnodar. Located in Ciscaucasia, on the left bank of the Kuban River. The railway station of Kubanskaya in the Armavir - Kavkazskaya line. Population (1992 est.) 31 thousand, (1979 est.) 27.3 thousand.

Formed in the 19th century of the village of Kubanskoye (founded in 1867 by retired soldiers) and the settlement of Khutorok. Kubanskoye was a constituent of Labinsk otdel (section) of Kuban oblast. At the end of the 19th century, it had about 6 thousand inhabitants; a school, 6 mills, 7 steam and 17 horse threshers, 20 commercial and industrial establishments, 8 factories and plants. Famous for sheep-breeding. With development of industry, transformed into the urban-type community of Novokubansky. In 1966, the settlement of Novokubansky, the village of Kaplanovo, the farms of Proletarsky and Zalessky, the settlement of Mayak were united to form the town of Novokubansk.

Present Novokubansk is an agricultural centre with industry oriented on processing of the agricultural raw materials. The town has food-processing industry (a sugar-refinery, an alcohol-cognac distillery, a large-scale mechanised bakery, etc.), a factory of ceramic wall materials, a pedigree state farm (sovkhoz) and a fattening unit.

Novokubansk has Kuban Research Institute of Testing of Tractors and Agricultural Machines.
