Azerbaijan: advocate demands reconsideration of Zakhid's case

Elchin Sadygov, advocate of Ganimat Zakhidov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Azadlyg", who is serving his term in Azerbaijan, has addressed the Supreme Court of his country with a petition on reconsideration of his client's case in the context of the recent arrest of Sevgilada Gulieva, 34, on whose complaint Zakhidov was sentenced to four years of imprisonment.

The advocate believes that the decisions of the Supreme Court and Baku Appeal Courts in relation to Zakhidov should be cancelled and a repeated judicial investigation should be appointed.

"It is remarkable that then Gulieva, being in search, was easily coming to the trial and evidenced," said Mr Sadygov.

The secretariat of the Supreme Court refrained from any comments on the petition of Zakhidov's advocate, having noticed that "it will be considered, and the respective decision will be made."
