In North Ossetia, activists disappointed by verdict to Giorgi Guev

No guilt of Giorgi Guev, a native of North Ossetia, has been proven, but law enforcers do not want to admit their mistake, states the NGO "Mothers of Beslan". Activist Alan Zoloev announced new car rallies with the demand to release Giorgi Guev.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since May 2019, Giorgi Guev has been kept in custody on the charge of financing terrorism. On November 20, 2020, a court sentenced him to six years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.

According to Alan Zoloev, it is important to involve public opinion in the Giorgi Guev's case, since people tend to trust the law enforcement bodies in such matters.

"The NGO 'Mothers of Beslan' wrote appeals in support of Giorgi Guev to the Russian General Prosecutor, but there was little hope for a positive outcome of the case," said Aneta Gadieva, the NGO's deputy chair.

There is hope for a mitigation of the sentence, but it is as small as the statistics on acquittals in Russia is low, that is, less than 1%, Soslan Didarov, a delegate of the Vladikavkaz Assembly of Representatives, notes on his Instagram page.

The family of Giorgi Guev is being supported by fellow villagers, says Emma Gueva, the mother of the convict. The woman has described her son as an exemplary family man. Giorgi Guev takes care of his two minor children.

Advocate Umalat Saigitov notes that the accusation was based on the fact that Giorgi Guev allegedly adheres to the radical trend of Islam, but the court rejected that position.
