Measures against coronavirus spread show toughness of Chechen authorities

The authorities of Chechnya are reacting to the situation with the coronavirus spread in their common way, the experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" said in their comments on the harsh measures introduced in the republic.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 28, Magomed Daudov, Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, said that entry into Grozny was restricted for residents of other cities and districts due to the threat of coronavirus. Law enforcers are patrolling streets in Chechnya at night and ask local residents to return to their homes.

On March 29, the "Novaya Gazeta" wrote that in Chechnya, law enforcers were armed with polypropylene pipes intended to punish violators of the quarantine regime.

The situation with coronavirus in Russia has shown an absolute unpreparedness of both the population and the authorities to solve the problem within the legal space, Dmitry Oreshkin, a political analyst, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent on March 30.

He has noted that where there is competition in the political life experience is gained there of legal norms to address various problems.

"But in Chechnya it isn't gained. You can drive people home with sticks, demanding to observe the quarantine. Now, the task is ideal for solving by police methods. Placing a policeman at every intersection, and that's it – everyone will sit at home and die quietly if one becomes infected," Mr Oreshkin has summed up.
