ECtHR awards compensation to resident of Dagestan for torture by law enforcers

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has awarded 30,000 euros of compensation to Biyarslan Akaev, a native of Dagestan, who has claimed that law enforcers had tortured him with electric current.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Biyarslan Akaev, a resident of the Khasavyurt District, was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of helping militants. Akaev has stated that he had incriminated himself under torture. According to his version, in February 2017, masked law enforcers took him out into the forest, beat him up and tortured him with electric shocks. The ECtHR communicated his complaint in October 2018.

Today, the ECtHR has awarded Akaev the compensation that he claimed – 30,000 euros, Igor Sholokhov, a lawyer cooperating with the human rights organization "Zona Prava" (Law Zone), told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. In his opinion, the ECtHR has fairly quickly considered Akaev's complaint.
