Dagestani drivers consider shame effective punishment for reckless drivers

The practice of public apologies can be an effective correctional measure for violators of the traffic rules, Dagestani drivers believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in January, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan posted a video in which a Khasavyurt resident apologized for violating the traffic rules. The Dagestani MIA declared the administrative fine being an insufficient correctional measure.

Bragging in social networks about violations of the traffic rules is "a kind of challenge to society, and posts with apologies of such reckless drivers is a countermeasure," believes Isalmagomed Nabiev, the chairman of the Independent Trade Union of Drivers and Entrepreneurs of Dagestan.

"If a driver did not flaunt a video, then that would be a completely different matter. However, there is an element (of bragging) about his act, and therefore a response is needed. The reckless driver might have continued to boast about his act to his friends, while the publicity and publication of the video with apologies is important for correctional purposes," Isalmagomed Nabiev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Makhmud, a taxi driver in Makhachkala, praised the publication of an apology for a traffic violation: "If people have conscience, they will be ashamed of such a video and they will not want to do such things anymore. I do not know in what else way the society can correct them. And that could be a good lesson to others."
