Social media users express irony over Ramzan Kadyrov's best wishes on Human Rights Day

On International Human Rights Day, Ramzan Kadyrov wrote a post on efficient human rights institutions in Chechnya. Social media users left a lot of ironic posts concerning the Chechen leader's message and reminded of the persecution of human rights defenders engaged in activities in the republic.

The leader of Chechnya wrote that "Russia, like nowhere else in the world, appreciates the value of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN)."

"The situation with human rights in our republic is depressing. This is proved at least by the fact that a number of our leaders and law enforcers are included in the US sanctions lists because of human rights violations ... There is one law in the republic, and it is the will of Ramzan," believes Abubakar, a local resident.

All Chechen institutions, which declare their goal to protect human rights, are efficient only "in terms of protecting the leaders of the republic from criticism from the outside," suggests Markha, a resident of Chechnya.

Many users of social networks took the Ramzan Kadyrov's statement about efficient human rights institutions in Chechnya as a joke.

On Ramzan Kadyrov's page in Instagram, one of the social network users reminded of attacks on human rights defenders in Chechnya.

The office of the Joint Mobile Group (JMG) of Human Rights Defenders operated in Chechnya until 2015. According to a report prepared by the Human Rights Watch (HRW), the JMG's office was three times subjected to assaults and arsons.
