Akhmed Barakhoev files complaint with the ECtHR

The first complaint of an Ingush oppositionist, arrested after the March rallies in Magas, has been filed with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Akhmed Barakhoev, one of the leaders of the protests, demands to recognize a violation of his rights under four articles.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmed Barakhoev was arrested within the criminal case about calls for riots and using violence against a state official; and the Human Rights Centre "Memorial" declared him and four other protest leaders to be political prisoners. On September 9, the Stavropol Territorial Court refused to satisfy the appeal against Barakhoev's arrest, leaving him in custody until November 10.

On behalf of Barakhoev, the complaint to the ECtHR was filed by lawyers of the "Legal Initiative" project. The activist complains about a violation of the right to liberty and personal security, right to a fair trial, a violation of the limits of rights restriction, and a violation of the freedom of assembly and association (Articles 5, 6, 11 and 18 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR)).
