Court leaves Armenian General Manvel Grigoryan in custody

The defence of General Manvel Grigoryan, a former delegate of the National Assembly of Armenia, failed to secure the release of the defendant in the courtroom on bail.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 6, Manvel Grigoryan was again transferred from the hospital for prisoners to a civilian hospital, and his condition was assessed as severe. The defence indicated that at the time of his arrest, Manvel Grigoryan suffered from four diseases, and a year later, he was diagnosed with 33 deceases. However, the court dismissed the defence motion to release Manvel Grigoryan from custody.

Manvel Grigoryan was detained in June 2018. He is accused of illegal arms trafficking and embezzlement on a large scale. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Manvel Grigoryan had embezzled humanitarian aid intended for the army.

Today, Manvel Grigoryan has been brought to a court hearing in a wheelchair, the "Lragir" reports.

Advocate Levon Bagdasaryan has noted that, according to medical officers, Manvel Grigoryan suffers from the numbness of his legs, the "Armenpress" reports. However, the judge decided that the defence motion for the Manvel Grigoryan's release was groundless.

"The fact that Manvel Grigoryan participates in court hearings already means that his condition is satisfactory," stated the judge as quoted by the "Sputnik-Armenia".

Earlier, on June 28, Karen Grigoryan, a son of Manvel Grigoryan, the former mayor of Echmiadzin, was accused of embezzlement.
