Georgian court released Azerbaijani activist on bail

Avtandil Mamedov, an Azerbaijani citizen, who was detained in Georgia at the request of Baku, has been set free by the court in Marneuli on bail for the time of considering his extradition issue, his wife has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Avtandil Mamedov was detained on June 17 in Tbilisi at the request of Azerbaijan, where he had been accused of a fraud. Azerbaijani activists distrust the reality of charges and fear that Mamedov could expect an unjust trial and torture in Azerbaijan.

Today, the Marneuli court has considered Avtandil Mamedov's extradition at the request of Baku. The court decided to release him under the bail of 3000 laris (about USD 1070), Gyunel Mamedova, the activist's wife told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to her story, according to the judgement, Mamedov will be at large for three months, while the issue of his extradition is being considered.

Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the head of the Centre for the Protection of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan, has prepared a petition to Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Georgian Prime Minister, with a call not to extradite Avtandil Mamedov to Azerbaijan. The petition will be posted in social networks for signing, after which it will be sent to the addressee, Mr Gyulyalyev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
