In Armenia, court leaves former General Manvel Grigoryan under arrest

In Yerevan, the court dismissed the defence motions for the release of General Manvel Grigoryan on bail and holding a field court hearing in the hospital where the defendant stayed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 15, the court extended for two months the arrest of Manvel Grigoryan, accused of illegal arms trafficking and embezzlement of army food.

Today, the court has held the first hearing in the case against Manvel Grigoryan and his wife Nazik Amiryan. Manvel Grigoryan himself did not participate in the court hearing because of his poor health state. He was transferred from prison to the medical centre.

Public prosecutor spoke out against changing the pre-trial restriction measure. "Only if Manvel Grigoryan is in custody, it is possible to ensure an objective hearing," the public prosecutor stated.

In June 2018, Manvel Grigoryan, the head of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union, was detained in the case on illegal arms trafficking and large-scale embezzlement. During a search, firearms were found in his house. Nikol Pashinyan, the chairman of the Armenian government, stated that the General had embezzled the humanitarian aid intended for the army.
