Chechen authorities report about over 6500 people willing to move to Galanchozh District

It was decided to restore seven dwelling settlements in the Galanchozh District of Chechnya that is bordering on Ingushetia, the Chechen authorities have reported. The future resettlers interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" expect that authorities will help them with employment.

The Chechen authorities announced their plans to restore the Galanchozh District in late 2018.

In December 2018, Ingush activists called on residents of Chechnya to abandon resettlement to the Galanchozh District, formed "in a part of the territories of the Sunzha and Djeirakh Districts of Ingushetia."

In his turn, an official from of the office of the head and government of Chechnya promised that "those engaged in agriculture will receive financial support."

Prior to Stalin's deportation in 1944, over 10,000 lived in the Galanchozh District. In late 1950s, when Chechens received the right to return to their homeland, residents of the district were forbidden to settle in their villages.

The natives of the Galanchozh district, who expressed no intent to return to their ancestral villages, explain that they see no great prospects in agriculture there.

Until they create acceptable conditions in the district, there is no sense to move there, said Ramzan, a resident of Grozny. "There are no roads, electricity, gas and water supplies in the district; and most importantly, there is no work," he has explained.

Earlier, residents of Chechnya claimed that there was no infrastructure, no work, and no housing in the Galanchozh District.

In January, 2019, Ramzan Kadyrov criticized those residents of Chechnya, who first asked to restore their ancestral villages, but then refused to go to live there.
