Armenia: political analyst Arkady Vardanyan released by amnesty

Today, Arkady Vardanyan, a political analyst, sentenced to 10 years in prison, has been released from the Vardashen Prison.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in December 2016, the court sentenced Arkady Vardanyan, Doctor of Political Sciences, a citizen of the Russian Federation, to 10 years in prison, finding him guilty of preparing a murder. Vardanyan himself refused to plead guilty.

On November 3, President Armen Sargsyan signed an amnesty law concerning over 600 inmates, which was adopted earlier by the Armenian Parliament.

Arkady Vardanyan's prison term was reduced; and today he was released from prison, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed at the press service of the Penitentiary Department of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Armenia.

Mr Vardanyan was engaged in business in Russia; and in Armenia he took part in political life: in 2000, he organized a rally and an unsanctioned march, for which he served his administrative arrest; in 2013, he supported the so-called "revolution of greetings", organized by Raffi Ovannisyan, the leader of the "Heritage" Party, and repeatedly spoke at rallies.
