Azerbaijan: mother of suspect in attempt on Ganja Mayor demands to stop torturing him

Yunis Safarov, detained on suspicion of assassination attempt on the Mayor of the city of Ganja, is exposed to physical and psychological pressure, his mother, Leylakhanum Ismailova, has stated. She called on the Azerbaijani authorities to end torturing her son.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 12, Yunis Safarov's mother stated that law enforcers were trying to get evidence against the lawyer Elchin Sadygov from her son.

According to his mother, Yunis faces torture with electric current; and he is now in poor condition.

According to Ismailova, her son was forced to slander Sadygov in order to "intimidate lawyers and discourage them from defending those whom the authorities treat as their enemies."
