Rights defenders achieve new inquiry into death of Anapa resident at police

The death case of Ivan Geliev, a resident of Anapa, after his detention by law enforcers has been resumed by decision of the Prosecutor's Office, the Committee against Torture (CaT) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 18, 2017, Ivan Geliev died, according to his sister, in the compartment for detainees of a police car in Anapa.

In July 2017, Roman Veretennikov, a lawyer, who represented the interests of the casualty's sister, called the inquiry into Geliev's death inefficient.

However, on June 29, the investigator ruled to stop the criminal case. In his opinion, Geliev's death was not criminal, but was a result of acute heart failure at the background of alcohol intoxication, the CaT's website has reported.

Human rights defenders assert that the investigator has ignored the results of forensic medical examinations.
