Georgian villagers block Tbilisi-Batumi Highway

The Tbilisi-Batumi Highway was blocked for 20 minutes by residents of the village of Kheltubani, dissatisfied with the inquiry into the death of their 18-year-old fellow villager. After the police freed the roadway, protesters went to a rally in the city of Gori.

During the highway blocking, there was a clash of protesters with policemen, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Merab Merabashvili, the father of the deceased Tornike Merabashvili, took part in the protest.

According to the official version, on July 6, the young man was hit by a car on the Gori-Medjvriskhevi road section. However, his family believes that the he was killed.

His relatives do not exclude that the road accident was staged in order to hide real killers. They suspect that Tornike was severely beaten up by his peers. According to relatives, they noticed numerous wounds and bruises on the young man's body.

The villagers' protest is caused by the fact that as of today, more than two months after the tragedy, the police have not yet detained a single suspect; and relatives failed to receive a forensic conclusion about his death, the "News-Georgia" has reported.
