Historians describe influence of first republic on modern Azerbaijan (+video)

Founders of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) were forced to act in the context of a clash of geopolitical interests in the Transcaucasus, scientists and politicians note. They believe the modern state of Azerbaijan became the successor of the ADR, but the authorities do not pay due attention to perpetuating the memory of the founders of the republic.

Azerbaijan declared its independence after the collapse of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic on May 26, 1918. The first ADR fell on April 28, 1920, after the invasion of the Red Army. Azerbaijan regained its independence after the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and declared itself the successor to the ADR.

On May 28, the Day of Republic, no demonstrations and parades are planned at the state level in Azerbaijan, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"The today's Azerbaijan Republic was not created from scratch. It declared to the world that it was the successor to the ADR, which was the first republic in the Muslim and Turkic world," noted Nasiman Yagublu, a researcher of the history of Azerbaijan.

According to Professor Jamil Gasanli, the Armenian government has violated the agreements with the Azerbaijani government that after receiving Irevan, they will not make territorial claims to Nagorno-Karabakh.

The ADR existed for a very little time, and then it was not possible to adopt the Constitution, noted Erkin Gadirli, a member of the Mejlis of the "Republican Alternative Party" (ReAl).

"Therefore, the concept of succession is more of political and moral than of legal nature," Erkin Gadirli said.
