Power agents report tension decrease in Northern Caucasus

In the first quarter of 2017, the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) saw a drop in the number of terrorism-related crimes by 37.5%.

This was announced today by Sergey Bachurin, the head of the Chief Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for the NCFD at a press conference in Pyatigorsk.

This confirms the trend fixed by the "Caucasian Knot" of this year’s improvement of the situation in the region.

In the first quarter (Q1) of 2017, the number of victims of the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus dropped by more than half as compared to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2016. Thus, while in the period from October 1 to December 31, 2016, a total of 92 victims of the conflict were reregistered in the region, in the period from January 1 to March 31, 2017, the figure was 45.

At the same time, the situation may differ from region to region of the NCFD; details are available in the statistics of the "Caucasian Knot". Thus, the data on Chechnya indicate a worsening of the situation – in Q1 of 2017, the number of conflict victims was 36 people, while in Q4 of 2016, they were 28 in number.

These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own data and information from open sources. More details can be found in the Section of the "Caucasian Knot" entitled "Northern Caucasus – Statistics of Victims".
