Political analysts find Erdogan's reforms good for Armenia
After the constitutional referendum, Turkish authorities will be more concerned with addressing domestic rather than foreign policy problems, the Armenian political analysts, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot", believed. They hope that Western countries, dissatisfied with the Turkish reforms, will provide even greater support to Armenia.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 16 the supporters of amendments to the Constitution won the referendum – over 51% of the voters supported the amendments.
The referendum in Turkey is one of the steps towards "establishing a Sultan’s regime," said Alexander Iskandaryan, a political analyst and the Director of the Caucasus Institute.
He also believes that "the changes in Turkey will not affect the security of Armenia." He doubts that Turkey "will start a war with neighbouring states."
In the opinion of Levon Ovsepyan, a turkologist and a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, "the dictatorship will make Turkey unpredictable and aggressive; and this will affect its policy in the region."
In his turn, Ara Papyan, a political analyst and the head of the "Modus Vivendi" Centre, believes that "the current situation in Turkey favours Armenia." According to his story, Turkey "has always been a threat to the national security of Armenia."
However, in his opinion, the tensions in relations with Turkey "will not encourage Western countries, in particular, the USA, to recognize the Armenian Genocide." He believes that "this lever of pressure on Turkey, Western countries will save for an emergency in future."
