Ombudsman calls on NKR’s NGOs to inform the world about situation in conflict zone

In February and March, the Ombudsman Ruben Melikyan made a trip to Europe and the USA, where he presented a report on the aggravation of the Karabakh conflict in April 2016. Today, he told journalists and NGO activists about his meetings in the European Parliament and with the Diaspora in the United States.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone deteriorated at night of April 2, 2016. On April 5, three days later, the parties to the conflict concluded a truce.

In April 2016, many residents of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), who occurred in the territory controlled by the Azerbaijani army, were tortured or killed; and cases of beheading were recorded, says the report presented in Europe and the USA. "The MEPs were provided with a lot of evidence, facts, photographs and video materials about all these cases," said the NKR’s Ombudsman.

In his opinion, European structures should be involved in the life of the NKR. Mr Melikyan discussed with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) possibilities of NKR’s cooperation with Europe, and the security of those who come to the NKR, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Ruben Melikyan held at least 38 meetings with the members of the Armenian Diaspora in the USA. He noted that after the conflict escalation in April 2016, the Diaspora's interest in the NKR has doubled. The Diaspora believes that the NKR’s public "should take an active part in presenting itself to the whole world," said the Ombudsman. He believes that NKR’s public organizations should intensify their activities, because the world community and the Diaspora know too little about them.
